Gyarados 21/98 · Ancient Origins

Ancient Origins is a set in the XY series. It was released on 12 August 2015. The printed size is 98. This checklist is longer, at 101 cards. Gyarados is 21/98, in position 21 of 101 on this checklist. Before it is 20 Gyarados, and after it is 22 Vaporeon. The listed rarity is Rare Holo.

Gyarados is a Stage 1 Water Pokémon with 130 HP. In the Pokédex this is Gyarados (#130), generation 1 (Kanto). The card says it evolves from Magikarp. In this catalog that name is Magikarp (#129).

TOKIYA illustrated this card. The same name is on 93 other cards in the catalog.

Gyarados (#130) has 56 other cards in the catalog. Those other cards are in 39 sets. The other printings with a release date run from 1999 to 2025. The earliest other card is Gyarados 6/102 in Base (1999). That card lists 100 HP, and this one lists 130 HP. Both list the rarity Rare Holo. Mitsuhiro Arita illustrated that card, and TOKIYA illustrated this one. 43 other cards of Gyarados list a different HP.

The attack Full Retaliation lists 30+ damage. The cost is Colorless, Colorless. This attack does 30 more damage for each damage counter on each of your Benched Magikarp. Thrash is another attack lists 100+ damage. The cost is Water, Water, Colorless, Colorless. Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 30 more damage. If tails, this Pokémon does 30 damage to itself. Weakness is Lightning ×2. Retreat cost is 3. θ Double is the ancient trait on this card. This Pokémon may have up to 2 Pokémon Tool cards attached to it. The flavor text reads "Rarely seen in the wild. Huge and vicious, it is capable of destroying entire cities in a rage."

I keep a set binder for Ancient Origins, meant to hold every card of that set. This card is one slot in the Ancient Origins set binder. A generation binder holds one card of each species. Gyarados can fill a slot in Generation 1 binder (Kanto). Themed lists that include this exact card are Magikarp and Gyarados. I still need this card.
