Unown [J] 38/53 · Wizards Black Star Promos

Unown is Pokédex #201, generation 2 (Johto). Unown [J] is a Basic Psychic Pokémon with 40 HP. The card lists level 17.

Unown [J] sits at 38/53 in Wizards Black Star Promos, position 38 of 53. Before it is 37 Hitmontop, and after it is 39 Misdreavus. The set belongs to the Base series. It was released on July 1, 1999. The printed size is 53, and the checklist is the same length. The listed rarity is Promo.

[Join] is listed as Pokémon Power. Once during your turn (before your attack), if you have Unown [J], Unown [O], Unown [I], and Unown Dragon on your Bench, you may search your deck for a Basic Pokémon or Evolution card. Show that card to your opponent, then put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward. The attack Hidden Power lists 10 damage. The cost is Psychic. Weakness is Psychic ×2. Retreat cost is 1. The card text says: You may have up to 4 Basic Pokémon cards in your deck with Unown in their names. The flavor text reads "Their shapes look like hieroglyphs on ancient tablets. It is said that the two are somehow related."

Unown (#201) has 95 other cards in the catalog. Those other cards are in 17 sets. The other printings with a release date run from 2001 to 2026. The earliest other card is Unown [A] 14/75 in Neo Discovery (2001). That card is named Unown [A], while this one is Unown [J]. Both list 40 HP. The rarity there is Rare Holo, and here it is Promo. CR CG gangs illustrated that card, and Hideki Kazama illustrated this one. 74 other cards of Unown list a different HP.

The illustrator line reads Hideki Kazama. I count 2 other cards in the catalog with that illustrator.

Wizards Black Star Promos set binder is where a full Wizards Black Star Promos set goes. This card fills one slot there. A generation binder holds one card of each species. Unown can fill a slot in Generation 2 binder (Johto). I still need this card.
