Wartortle 15/18 · Southern Islands

Southern Islands is a set in the Other series. It was released on July 31, 2001. The printed size is 18, and the checklist is the same length. Wartortle is 15/18, in position 15 of 18 on this checklist. Before it is 14 Slowking, and after it is 16 Lickitung.

Wartortle is a Stage 1 Water Pokémon with 60 HP. In the Pokédex this is Wartortle (#008), generation 1 (Kanto). The card says it evolves from Squirtle. In this catalog that name is Squirtle (#007). The card lists Blastoise, Blastoise (#009) under evolves to.

Naoyo Kimura illustrated this card. The same name is on 256 other cards in the catalog.

Wartortle (#008) has 18 other cards in the catalog. Those other cards are in 16 sets. The other printings with a release date run from 1999 to 2023. The earliest other card is Wartortle 42/102 in Base (1999). That card lists 70 HP, and this one lists 60 HP. Ken Sugimori illustrated that card, and Naoyo Kimura illustrated this one. 16 other cards of Wartortle list a different HP.

The attack Water Gun lists 20+ damage. The cost is Water, Water. Does 20 damage plus 10 more damage for each Water Energy attached to Wartortle but not used to pay for this attack's Energy cost. You can't add more than 20 damage in this way. Weakness is Lightning ×2. Retreat cost is 1. The flavor text reads "When attacked, this Pokémon withdraws into its shell, although it can't quite pull in all of its long tail."

I keep a set binder for Southern Islands, meant to hold every card of that set. This card is one slot in the Southern Islands set binder. A generation binder holds one card of each species. Wartortle can fill a slot in Generation 1 binder (Kanto). I still need this card.
