Ethan's Magcargo 24/217 · Ascended Heroes

Ascended Heroes is a set in the Mega Evolution series. It was released on January 30, 2026. The printed size is 217. This checklist is longer, at 295 cards. Ethan's Magcargo is 24/217, in position 24 of 295 on this checklist. Before it is 23 Ethan's Slugma, and after it is 25 Entei. The listed rarity is Rare.

Ethan's Magcargo is a Stage 1 Fire Pokémon with 130 HP. In the Pokédex this is Magcargo (#219), generation 2 (Johto). The card says it evolves from Ethan's Slugma. In this catalog that name is Slugma (#218).

kodama illustrated this card. The same name is on 86 other cards in the catalog.

Magcargo (#219) has 29 other cards in the catalog. Those other cards are in 21 sets. The other printings with a release date run from 2001 to 2026. The earliest other card is Magcargo 33/64 in Neo Revelation (2001). That card is named Magcargo, while this one is Ethan's Magcargo. That card lists 80 HP, and this one lists 130 HP. The rarity there is Uncommon, and here it is Rare. Shin-ichi Yoshida illustrated that card, and kodama illustrated this one. 24 other cards of Magcargo list a different HP.

Melt Away is listed as Ability. If this Pokémon has no Energy attached, it has no Retreat Cost. The attack Lava Burst lists 70× damage. The cost is Fire, Fire, Fire. Discard up to 5 Fire Energy from this Pokémon. This attack does 70 damage for each card you discarded in this way. Weakness is Water ×2. Retreat cost is 3. The flavor text reads "This Pokémon lives near the craters of volcanoes. It stores fire energy in its shell of cooled and hardened magma." The regulation mark is I.

I keep a set binder for Ascended Heroes, meant to hold every card of that set. This card is one slot in the Ascended Heroes set binder. A generation binder holds one card of each species. Magcargo can fill a slot in Generation 2 binder (Johto). Themed lists that include this exact card are Trainer's Pokémon and Ethan and his Pokémon. I still need this card.
